My son and I just completed our trip to Tanzania, booked with Kibo Expeditions. I thought best to write a review while the memory is fresh.
We booked with Kibo Expeditions based on the recommendation of a friend. We were completely impressed by the quality of service and experience that was provided.
Our contact person through the booking process was Edward Ernest Kutingala. Interacting with him on line was very easy--responses generally quick and booking via bank transfer was pretty easy. We signed up for a 9 day trek on the mountain, followed by 4 days on safari.
As promised, Ernest was waiting for us at the airport, and took us to the Mount Meru Hotel, a very comfortable and lovely lodging off of the main road in Arusha---quiet, attractive grounds, a peaceful oasis amidst the hustle and bustle of Arusha.
We took the Machame route, a total climb of about 11,000 feet over 8 days, culminating with summiting and spending the night at Crater camp. The pace was steady, "pole-pole", and provided for excellent acclimatization. By the time of our summit from Barafu camp to Uhuru Peak, we were definitely ready for a 4000 foot climb over about six hours which started at about 5 am (rather than the midnight starts of most other companies).
Both guides, Ernest and Justin, were friendly and a pleasure to trek with. Knowledgeable about the area and always willing to provide such information, they also were great to talk with off the trail about life in Tanzania. Our staff of porters and chef Gaspar were excellent----nice guys, plenty of good food (especially Gaspar's daily soups), and always encouraging us in our achievements. Ernest kept our friends and family updated on FaceBook with posts nearly daily.
The equipment that they provided was in tip top shape--walk in tent, mess tent for dining, and portable private toilet. Additionally, as my luggage did not arrive when landed at JRO, Ernest provided me some equipment that I needed until my bag arrived and his porter brought it up to our second campsite on the trail.
Once done with the trek, we spent the night again at Mount Meru Hotel in preparation for a 4 day safari that Kibo Expeditions organized for us. One day in Tarangire National Park, two in Serengeti National Park and one in Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Lodging in all 3 were different yet good quality---from the tents of Kati Kati camp on the savannah, to the bungalow near Lake Manyara, to the coffee farm just outside of Ngorongoro. Our guide Charles was a wealth of knowledge and took all questions eagerly. He had a keen eye for spotting animals so far out of eye range yet viewable with binoculars or telephoto.
Overall we had an A+ experience. We'd highly recommend Kibo Expeditions if anyone were planning to trek Kilimanjaro and go on safari.

Jambo Carol, I had to write to you, because my comments would make too long a testimonial. First off, thank you so much for all the information you sent us. We felt well-prepared and there were no surprises.
We had the most amazing trip! Everything exceeded our expectations - the team, the lodging, the safari. We were very fortunate to have fantastic weather and especially lucky on our safari! I am most impressed, however, by the Taraji trek team. They really made us feel like family. Every need was taken care of. Gaspar's food was delicious. Mandela kept the toilet clean and ready. Zacayo gave us impeccable service. The sweet boys, Benjamin and Baraka, always met us at camp to take our packs and had our tent set up beautifully. Robert was a gentle and knowledgable guide, always answering our endless questions. I am thankful and honored to have had Stanley as my personal porter. He is such a strong and good man. He anticipated my needs even before I asked for anything.
Most of all, Ernest, kept us happy and safe. He, and the others, patiently taught us Swahili, never laughing when I said something inadvertently inappropriate or completely mispronounced things. They were all so wonderful - indulging me with requests for singing and dancing and the endless requests for Swahili lessons.
Ernest takes such good care of his team and it really shows. His generosity was astounding - he allowed me to call our children on his phone but wouldn't let me pay him for the minutes. Even after the trek when we got dropped off, he arranged for us to have a driver take us to the market as we still had a few gifts to buy. Although summiting was spectacular, my favorite memories of the trek will always be the team. There were countless others whom we did not get to meet by name, but they always greeted us with high fives, encouraging us with "good job!" and ALWAYS with those beautiful smiles. I was very sad to leave them after Kili.
Charles, our safari guide, was incredible. The only thing that surpassed his knowledge was his incredible eagle-eye spotting abilities! We were able to see all of the Big 5 animals in 2 days...this will be tough to beat!
I don't know how you managed to get us the upgrade to the Nomad camp, but thank you, thank you, thank you! I think I could have stayed there forever. The fact that I was able to enjoy 16 days away from my children speaks volumes - something I did not think would be possible prior to this trip!
I am hoping to share my experiences with all of our friends and hope to send some business your way. As we trekked up the mountain, we did notice that our porters were better equipped than most and seemed much happier as well.
I am proud to have had this team and I do not feel that anything could have been improved upon.
Again, you have my sincere gratitude,
Mary

Carol, where to start?! I spent months (literally) researching companies for my Kili climb. The things important to me were my own personal safety, porter welfare and a company that was either local or that gave back to the Tanzanian people. Somehow I came across your company and then eventually narrowed down my choice to you. I felt fairly comfortable that I had made a good choice so I paid my deposit.
Throughout the ensuing months, your prompt and thoughtful responses to my questions left me enroute to Tanzania confident I had chosen the right company. I had fairly high expectations (after all, I had spent months researching, right?). I do not have sufficient words to describe my experience with Taraji. My guide Justin, was fabulous no other words to describe. He is professional, adept, knowledgable....I could go on and on.
The team I had met every single expectation...in fact, they exceeded by far, every expectation. Every single person of the team. I found complete professionalism, efficiency, kindness, warmth....again, I could go on and on! The 8 days that I spent with these incredible people will be hard to surpass.
I summited (Yeah!) and it took my legs and my will to do so but I give a huge credit to Justin and the team for helping me do so!! I can't thank Justin and the entire crew enough for the amazing experience I had. They are now my Tanzanian "family"! And I would be missing a lot in this post if I didn't take the opportunity to say "thanks" for truly caring about the people who work for you! All the porters and staff on my team were appropriately dressed and outfitted (compared to some other companies' porters who weren't!).
To close, I want to extend to you the highest regard and praise for Justin and my entire mountain team! They made my 8 days on the mountain exceptional and I honestly can't thank them enough!
With much sentiment and even more gratitude,
Shelly :)

Dear Carol and Eben,
I hope all is well when you receive our email. We just wanted to send a quick note to let you know how incredible our Kilimanjaro experience was with Justin as our guide! We can't begin to express our appreciation for the way your team handled themselves. Their professionalism, attention to detail, and their "can do" attitude was remarkable and contagious.
Justin's leadership, expertise, kindness, and support helped each and every one of us achieve our goal. It is because of his strength and knowledge, that we all successfully summited Mt. Kilimanjaro. We could not have asked for a better leader for our six day trek. He selected the right team to help guide and coach us and was consistently a source of strength for all of us. We are incredible grateful to him and his team.
Last by not least, you can count on us to recommend Taraji to friend as the only way to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro!
Thank you so much.
Best,

"My wife and I were thrilled to summit Mt. Kilimanjaro -- it was a fantastic experience that neither of us will forget and it was made possible by the terrific support, guidance and knowledge of our Taraji team.
The 9-day Western Breach route worked out perfectly for our needs and schedule and allowed us to acclimatize well which played a big part in enabling us to reach our goal of standing on top of Kibo!
I want to elaborate on a couple of the responses on the evaluation form -- specifically about the support team: they were fantastic! Ernest was a terrific guide and the whole team was great. Very attentive, supportive, experienced and professional."

Dear Eben,
Thanks for your email welcoming us home! You’ll be pleased to know that out trip went without a hitch and exceeded our expectations by far! We were so happy with the places you selected for us to go. John had no problems at all with his back with the fly in fly out arrangements and the vehicles were very comfortable. I’ve sent a few of my favourite photos, including one of us since we’ve never met! We were really fortunate to have some guides who knew quite a lot about photography and the photos seemed to improve over time.
Some feedback, (we saw loads of animals at all the locations):
· Selous was fabulous, we saw so much wildlife in the evening on the lake shore from the boat, we also saw a sad but amazing thing, a bull giraffe dying after being knocked down in a fight, also two sightings of the family of wild dogs going on a hunt, one other couple on drives, Siwandu was great
· Ngorongoro-saw a rhino (surrounded by about 20 vehicles poor thing), you were right, Crater Lodge is weird, your suggestion of two nights was enough but glad we saw the crater
· Luxury Under Canvas Ndutu, heaps of animals, loved the tents, had to move camps after our first camp got flooded and tents leaked ++, added to the fun and sense of adventure, one other couple on drives
· Grumeti, very luxurious and completed our big five with a leopard sighting, had private game drives
· Rwanda-you were right to suggest two treks, the first day the group was elusive and we had to give up chasing them, great time the next day with a group of 13.
The advice you gave re: tipping, visas, money, was invaluable and saved us from stress-had to help out a young traveller refused entry without dollars in Tanzania.
Thanks for contributing so much to our trip of a lifetime!
Kind regards,
Marcia and John M.

“The trek up Kilimanjaro is arduous and there is plenty that can go wrong although apart from some inclement weather not much did wrong for us. The guides were superb and monitored and encouraged our party throughout the trip. Any small issues that did crop up were handled seamlessly by the crew (a faulty sleeping bag replaced (how?) and some emergency wet weather gaiters found for one our fellow trekkers). Overall this was an excellent experience with Taraji looking after us from arrival to departure - nothing was too much trouble and we felt that while we were in Tanzania we were their guests and their aim was to provide help and guidance wherever it was needed (from the mountain to buying souvenirs). Excellent job, great service!” FEBRUARY 2014

“I was impressed that the team did everything they could to assist us to the top. The guides were very aware of our limitations and were proactive at insuring our successful summit and return. Safari - what can I say? It was unbelievable that animals of every kind would be right there 10 feet away. Memorable trip of a life time!” FEBRUARY 2014

"This was an amazing experience from beginning to end. Carol was so helpful during the planning stages, everything went smoothly. The experience on the mountain was absolutely wonderful, the route (Lemosho Western Breach) is stunningly beautiful, the guides were excellent and safety was number one, and the food was beyond any expectations. I would recommend Taraji hands down when it comes to a great overall experience on Kilimanjaro!"

" I can’t imagine a more professional outfit than I experienced with Taraji Kilimanjaro. However, on top of that , they added a personal touch that was beyond amazing. My climb with Taraji Kilimanjaro began a full 2 years before my actual climb. I was booked and scheduled to climb when I was diagnosed with a life threatening disease. Carol worked diligently with my travel insurance carrier to refund my money and then the following year really made an effort to work with me to reschedule and avoid the complications that we had experienced prior.
On the mountain the guides and the staff were nothing short of amazing. It was never a staff/client relationship we all became friends. I was most impressed with the attention to safety, nothing was ever compromised and no corners were ever cut. The biggest surprise was the food though. Those guys cooked better in the kitchen tent than I do at my house. I couldn’t recommend Taraji any more than I do. My only regret is that I didn’t know Ernest (guide) and his Maasai School before I came to Tanzania. I would loved to have brought the children some school supplies that they desperately need." "We normally hike and travel on our own, and felt a little self-conscious about the luxurious support of our Kilimanjaro trip. But I must say, it was more than nice to have warm water bottles for our sleeping bags, delicious and nourishing hot food served up to us 3 times a day, a private porta potty, and porters galore to carry all this luxurious stuff. That plus the route and the schedule made all the difference between the trip being an ordeal and a joy.
Comparing our experience with other trekkers that we saw and talked with on the mountain, we knew we had the best trip by far. We actually saw the mountain, camped in the crater, walked on glaciers, and enjoyed ourselves, instead of being dragged up to take a photo and then stagger back down to lower altitude to recover. We also really enjoyed getting to know our team and learn a little Swahili."

Team Taraji truly made our experience on Kilimanjaro unforgettable! Ernest and Justin took very good care of us every step of the way. They ensured our well-being on the mountain, and encouraged us on our progress. We also had the opportunity to interact with the porters. The team is very well organized; everything flowed so smoothly during the climb. It was the journey on the slopes of Kilimanjaro that made a lasting impression on us. The people, new friends we made along the way, the teamwork and professionalism of Team Taraji, along with its personal touch, the beauty of the mountain... will forever be etched in our memories and will always hold a special place in our hearts!
Eben and Carol arranged the perfect safari for us! Lemala Ewanjan in Serengeti National Park allowed us to experience the area's wildlife in such close proximity, and provided a comfortable and luxurious setting, so close to nature! The staff at Lemala Camp made us feel at home and part of their family. The service was impeccable and personalized. The accommodations complemented the wild surroundings, yet provided the great comforts of home.
Ernest also took time to make us feel at home in Arusha during the days before and after the trek. He truly is a remarkable person! The visit to the Maasai Joy School was heart-warming and inspiring. We hope to be able to assist the children and the school in the near future.
It made us sad to leave Tanzania and the people we made friends with along the way. But we intend to be back! There is still so much to see in this beautiful country and its people. Again, THANK YOU for a wonderful experience! OCTOBER 2013

Carol, Eben, the ground team, Ernest, Justin, and our 34 porters,
Thank you all so much for making a dream come true for us! We could not have made it to the summit without all of your hard work and dedication. From the very first email to the final goodbye, we were treated so well. Our questions, no matter how off the wall :-), were answered by Carol and our guides, Ernest and Justin. We cannot say enough about the food ~ Emmanuel and his assistants were AMAZING! Carol, Emmanuel needs to write a cookbook! We had fresh delicious food every day. We were amazed that we had fresh cut french fries and fried chicken! We cannot thank you enough for our anniversary cake! We were not expecting that and made for an anniversary that we will never forget!
Ernest and Justin were courteous, professional and monitored our safety. Thank you Ernest and Justin for taking us to the top of Lava Tower! Thank you Ernest for taking us to the Ash Pit!
Our porters were amazing ranging from our wait staff to our tent porters to our sanitation engineer to our water team to the porter that carried our cake to the porters who carried our food to the porters who carried all of the gear necessary for us to make it up and down the summit. Thank you does not seem enough!
We were also VERY lucky to have experienced this with two amazing people; A and M ~ thank you both for being so wonderful!

"We recently returned from an amazing trip to Rwanda and Tanzania arranged for us by Taraji Kilimanjaro. While speaking to the Rotary Club of Mitchell Field recently about the stunning experience of mountain gorilla trekking in Rwanda, Jim and I realized the need to publically thank Eben and Carol Schoeman, owners of Taraji Kilimanjaro. We have been to East Africa FIVE times - for safaris, climbing Kilimanjaro, teaching - and each trip came off flawlessly because of their efforts. We highly recommend Taraji Kilimanjaro and Eben Safaris to anyone interested in travel to East Africa!" August 2013

Dear Eben and Carol,
A truly wonderful experience for both ventures (climb and safari)!. Ernest, Justin & Team were magnificent, both in skills and wisdom. Unhesitating recommendation of Taraji will come from us! To get all 10 of our group of 52 - 61 year olds to the top in such good spirits and condition is testimony to their skills. Great food and beds too!
Our Northern Serengeti & Ngorongoro Crater safari was a wonderful introduction to African wildlife. The warmth and variety of our safari was great fun! Patient, knowledgeable guides who knew just where to take us were constantly eager to help and advise. Accommodation and meals were a delight with the pre-dinner chat relaxing around the fire in the evening a highlight.
Congratulations on running such a fine organization! JULY 2013

“Climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro has been on my bucket list for several years. Taraji Kilimanjaro came highly recommended by some good friends, so that part of the decision-making process was extremely easy for us. Having just returned from Mt. Hi Carol,
Ernest and Justin are absolutely fantastic! Had it not been for Ernest I would not have made it to the top of Kilimanjaro with the others. Ernest recognized that I had eaten little for three days and said, "I am worried that you do not have enough energy stores. You walk immediately behind me and you put your feet where I put my feet. You call the "rest stops" and I will get you to the top!" Sure enough, step by step, I followed in Ernest's footsteps...LITERALLY, and I made it! Ernest even volunteered AND overcame my protestations to carry my water bladder pack and water bottles for the last 2 days.
I am sure Ernest went above and beyond what was reasonably expected of him!
When we were in Arusha, before and after the walk and the safari, both Justin and Ernest clucked over our group like mother hens. Justin and Ernest drove us to the shops and markets and organized and attended a traditional African celebration banquet in Arusha when we requested them to do so for us. (This despite not seeing their families for 9 days) The cooks on the Kilimanjaro climb looked after my gluten intolerance with enthusiasm and I enjoyed my personal version of each meal. The soups (which I ate with the others) were absolutely delicious and exactly hit the spot.
The safaris were absolutely fabulous as were the staff and the drivers. The food was excellent and the communal dining was terrific. We had two drivers called Edwin (one at Serengeti and one at Ngorongoro) who were
both wonderful!!. They both went "above and beyond" to show us sights and birds and animals and also to identify various birds and animals.
Thank you so much for your involvement and advice as well which was invaluable. JULY 2013
